    Memorial Day

Wednesday, May 30, 2007, 12:17 PM PST [Witches Weekly]

Now that the pentacle has been approved to be placed on Veteran memorials, do you feel that other symbols of different pagan faiths (the druid sigil, thor’s hammer, etc) are as equally important to fight for?

Yea, of course! I think everyone should be able to put whatever religious symbol on their gravestone that they want. Also, some Druids or Asatru may not want to use the pentacle, so their gravestones would then be left blank with so many others.

But the realistic side of me knows that only the groups with the biggest numbers get what they want. So I wonder just how many Druids or Asatru would speak up in a fight to have their symbols included in the 'approved' list.

    Sacred (Retro from 2004)

Tuesday, April 10, 2007, 04:34 PM PST [Witches Weekly]

Here is my post from the first time these were asked. Kinda interesting to compare it to my answers now....

What is one item that is sacred to you? (Can be anything, tool, amulet, object, etc)
Since sacred means "Worthy of respect or dedication", I'd have to say that my Easter Island head statue is pretty sacred to me, as are my God and Goddess candles. My BoS notebooks are pretty sacred to me, too.

What holidays or time of year do you consider most sacred to you personally?
I don't really see only one part of the year to be worthy of respect - all times of the year have a reason we should honor and respect the Earth.

Describe your sacred space (can be anywhere, indoors, outdoors, etc):
Well, I have this altar set up for now:

But I also feel that nature itself is sacred. When we climb up a new mountainside, or we go exploring in the woods, or get lost on a desert plateau, I am in a sacred space.

    Kids in School

Friday, March 30, 2007, 04:37 PM PST [Witches Weekly]

What would you recommend to young children and teens (even if you are still one yourself) about how to handle religious discrimination in school? Would you recommend that they stay “in the broom closet?” Would you encourage them to stand for their right to wear a religious symbol as they see fit? How do you think the current school system and peer pressure could affect a child’s outlook on their pagan faith?

It's been a while since I was a kid in school, but I seem to remember that faith was never a big problem. You wore whatever you wanted, to represent your faith, and no one asked questions.

If it is no longer that simple, I fear for the children in school now. Particularly the "indigo kids" who seem to be enlightened beyond their years.

Personally, I think the schools should take an active role in reducing the amount of bullying that goes on. There should be something similar to a "zero tolerance" stance on it, and the rulemakers should stand behind it.

As for what advice I would give to a child in such a situation, where bullying and painful harassment still exist, I would tell them to be quiet and not start trouble. Defend yourself when the need arises - don't be the instigator, but don't be a coward either. Don't be swayed from your beliefs - stand fast to what you know is true, and ignore any other comments about you 'going to hell'.... Stand up for yourself and be strong, but don't become the pushy zealot or the bully.

    Your Family

Thursday, March 15, 2007, 06:48 PM PST [Witches Weekly]

Do you have any other pagan members of your family? Is there any significant pagan-oriented history of your ancestors and family? If neither of the above apply, what do you hope to leave behind for the next generation concerning your path and knowledge?

My mother and I got into Paganism around the same time.  Our journeys have been different so far, but we are sharing the current part again, as I have moved in with her after living on the opposite end of the country.  The local Pagans are slowly uniting, and her and I are instrumental in that to a point.

As far as I know, there are no pagans in our ancestry.  My mom's real dad's side has a full-blooded Native American female somewhere, but I am not sure of who/how/when.

I would like to leave a legacy of caring and nurturing the environment and protecting the planet we have been gifted to live on.  We need to enjoy this world while still honoring it.  Life was once based on our connection to the planet and nature, and I would like to see it become that once again.

    Personal Ceremonies

Thursday, March 8, 2007, 08:36 PM PST [Witches Weekly]

If you were to plan your own Wedding or Funeral ceremony, would you create two separate ceremonies for pagan and non-pagan folk, or would you just plan a ceremony around your beliefs. How would you feel if any non-pagan friends or family did not wish to attend such a ceremony?

I would try to plan it based on me (as that is who should be the center of attention at such a function) and my preferences/beliefs.  However, I would try to keep as little religion out of is as possible, so that everyone will feel welcome.  Most of my family is pretty quiet on religion, while most of my friends are Pagan (but not pushy, like some xtians).  I think if I kept religion out of it all together, the event should be a fairly peaceful one.

If, however, it was not accommodating enough, and some chose not to attend, I hope I don't lose the relationship I have with them because of it.  If so, they weren't meant to be close in the first place.
